College is an exciting time, but as the classes begin and routines become established many students find that they are overwhelmed by multiple stressors. Issues such as depression, anxiety, panic attacks, relationship issues, drug and alcohol abuse, and other mental health concerns seem magnified. Expectations are high and expenses can be as well. Studies show that access to mental health resources provides the extra support that is needed.

According to the most recent annual report from the Center for Collegiate Mental Health [x] instances of “threat to self” such as self-harm, serious suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts increased for the eighth year in a row among college students seeking mental health services.

“Through this program, I was able to access an amazing community of mental health experts right near campus. Not only was I able to meet with excellent therapists who were very in touch with on-campus issues, but because of my grant I was able to do so without worrying about payments, which truly changed my life.”

“It is extremely important to ensure that all college students have the opportunity to receive long-term mental health care, regardless of economic status. As a first-generation student myself, I know firsthand what it’s like to have a lack of financial resources for mental health treatment. Acacia Roots was born out of our own social justice mandate to help low-income students get the services they so desperately need. I’m so passionate about this program and we have already seen amazing results!” said Dr. Brett Donnelly, co-founder of Acacia Counseling and Wellness.

Acacia Roots provides need-based grants to college students who can’t afford therapy. Grants cover the cost of insurance co-pays and sliding scale fees for students with low-incomes, high deductible plans, or no insurance at all. The goal is to eliminate financial barriers to accessing needed mental health resources and making space for more equitable opportunities for college students.

One recipient of the grant stated, “For most of my life I struggled with anxiety and depression, however therapy was not really a thing my family did.  When I started college, I was overwhelmed with the stresses and transition, and my anxiety and depression worsened.  Once I started to seek the help I needed, I realized that because I didn’t have insurance, most places were just too expensive. As a first-generation American, I’ve benefited from lots of resources offered by my university, which is how I discovered Acacia Roots… Through this program, I was able to access an amazing community of mental health experts right near campus. Not only was I able to meet with excellent therapists who were very in touch with on-campus issues, but because of my grant I was able to do so without worrying about payments, which truly changed my life.”

An online fundraising campaign began on October 1st with the theme of Life is Wild. At Acacia, we know every human, every story, every ecosystem, needs light and nourishment in order to grow. We also know that growing is a shaky, stretching, wild process! If the wildness of the current world tells us anything, it certainly tells us that we are growing.

A donation to Acacia Roots supports the vast ecosystem of relationships that are connected to you. Donate today and nourish growth in your community. Go to acaciacw.com/roots to learn more, donate, and share our mission!
